Books to Borrow. Top American Full text of "History Of The Taxes On Knowledge". It's one of the best books I've ever read on the subject. Taxes are a necessary evil, we all know that. But what I got out of the book is how taxes are used not secure to the blessings of liberty and security of a country but how it almost always ends up the same way: corruption and abuse until a collapse comes/5(39).

This book can hardly be called the history of income taxes. There is no mention of Adam Smith, the Founders, the important Supreme Court cases, or the Legislative history of income taxes. There is also no discussion of the difference between wages and income.

Good history /5(6). Taxation is a mark of civilisation. Tax evolved and developed independently in the great ancient empires.

The concepts that evolved were transported to other empires and cultures where tax ideas took root. This pattern continues through to today as nations are influenced by developments in tax from other by: 3.

History of taxes. Tax as we know it today, existed in various forms throughout civilization. Kings, queens, chiefs, rulers, and people in authority collected taxes from the people they ruled. What was taxed, when it was taxed, and how much tax was imposed varied from society to society.

The history of income taxes in the United States goes back to the Civil War, when Abraham Lincoln signed into law the nation’s first-ever tax on personal income to help pay for the Union war effort.

After it was repealed a decade later, Congress tried again inenacting a flat rate federal income tax. Tax is a mandatory liability for every citizen of the country. There are two types of tax in india i.e. direct and indirect. Taxation in India is rooted from the period of Manu Smriti and Arthasastra.

Present Indian tax system is based on this ancient tax system which was based on the theory of maximum social welfare.
